#7082 Boston Tea Party and coffee
- Prior
to the Boston Tea Party, tea was the most popular drink for colonists
in America. Most of the colonial Americans were English, and tea
had been the traditional drink in England. The "tea tax" was England's
way of demonstrating their long reach of power to America. The
passing of this selective tax without legislative representation
empowered Americans to fight for their independence.
Ponder This: Would coffee
be as popular as it is today had it not been for the British tea
tax and the Boston Tea Party? The colonists were angry enough
to begin a revolution, and risk their lives over a tax on tea
and the idea of not being represented in legislation. What would
it take today to get people angry enough with unfair governance
to start a revolution? What does this say about culture today
versus the culture at the time of the American Revolution? Had
the colonists not chosen to fight for their independence at that
time, how might the course of history have been different in the
United States of America, and the rest of the world? Would there
have been a United States of America?
